A basics to bartending

This book had the important basics to bartending. A lot of grammatical errors and nothing special beyond the basics. Perfect for beginners.

Kindle edition, please avoid

I purchased the Kindle edition of this book because of the very low price-point and because there weren't any bad reviews; still, I really wish I could get that $2.51 back.

The first chapter was filled with plenty of really useful service industry tips, some of which were bartender-centric, but most were applicable to any service job. The experiences and stories from the author were very heartfelt and if he had more to share it could have made an excellent little book on its own. However, the book starts to get bogged down in the second chapter, where the author dives into the "essentials" of bartending: how beer is made, different kinds of wine, different branches of liquor, bar tools, etc. Anyone interested in bartending has heard this all before (how could you be interested without having knowledge/passion in your future/current career?), so it's a big bulk of filler to make the book appear larger. But that's not the worst part.

The biggest fault of this book is the formatting. I'm going to assume that the print version is formatted and spell/grammar-checked properly, but it appears that the author has zero respect for the digital format and entrusted his text to a third party to create a lackluster Kindle ebook. First, formatting: between every chapter there are 2-4 blank pages that serve absolutely no purpose, except to force the reader to keep pressing the forward button until the next chapter starts. In addition, there was no table of contents for easy linking to each chapter, just a title that said "Table of Contents" and then a few blank pages following it.

In addition, pages with images and accompanying text were horrendous to look at on the Kindle: some descriptions and images would cut off halfway and then the next page would start a new description, such as with the bar tools. To make things worse, it appears that the empty table of contents was a sign of things to come: at various points in the text, there would be a bolded and underlined line of text that was clearly an image holder (because it said something like "image holder for image32953.jpg")!

I'd call those formatting errors a real lack of attention to detail, but there was something even worse found within those digital pages: spelling and grammar errors. Virtually every page was riddled with words that had a misplaced space (lik ethis), the wrong word entirely, repeated words, and just missing letters and words, plus very poor grammar throughout. This might be acceptable for a elementary school research paper, but not when you're charging people money!

The information is all great in this book, but I seriously had to put it down for good in the 6th chapter because I was sick of seeing the author's lack of attention to detail show through repeated grammatical errors and poor formatting. Hopefully the print edition is good for those who own it, but the Kindle edition is impossible to read without going crazy. Save yourself a few bucks and pick up a better rated book.

This book carries the same text the book Bartending for dummies have. The difference is minimal and since I bought bartending for dummies right after trying to learn even more, I wasted my money. The other book has recipes in it, which makes it a keeper and lot more useful in paperback, for me at least.

Very practical for the NP

I use this book (and others in the series) as a nurse practitioner student. This reference has helped in various ways. Not only is it practical for understanding how to write SOAP notes, but it also helps with reinforcing one's knowledge of focused physical assessment, differential diagnosis, and even treatment plans. The most common disorders are covered, and the compact size of the book makes it convenient to carry around.

You Need This Book

My boys needed some help with their hitting, and I decided I would try to help them. Since it was almost 30 years since I played baseball (and I really wasn't very good), I decided I needed some help. I bought a number of baseball instruction books, including You Can Teach Hitting. What a magnificent book!
Baker breaks the swing into components, clearly describes the reason for each part of the swing, and provides appropriate drills for T-ballers through the pros.
The benefits of the book can be immediate. After reading the first couple chapters, I found out I had been taught to grip the bat incorrectly, and, not surprisingly, I passed the misinformation on to my boys. After one or two swings with the proper grip, each of my boys had clearly improved their bat speed. Given that success, they were will to try other changes, and in just one week, they became noticeably better hitters.
This book is clearly written, interesting, and all key points are fully illustrated. I am glad that I can now help my boys with hitting, being confident that I am teaching them properly, and not just passing on mistakes I learned when I played ball.

I have coached for 5 years and read books by Ted Williams and Tony Gwynn. I found this book to be the most complete guide to a good swing than the rest. Ted was a dead pull hitter and Tony was an opposite field hitter. Their styles are hard to duplicate. Dusty Baker brings it all to life in this book in a way that every Dad can understand . If you think your kids coach is going to know how to coach hitting think again. It's worth the money to see the extra hits!

An easy, sure fire way to learn a compact, powerful swing

The genius of Dusty Baker's book is that the swing is broken into components, each with a mnemonic phrase, which makes understanding and remembering the key concepts easy for the youngest player. The kids that I have coached who have lost form on their swing, can get their groove back by a single suggestion of, "Ike to Mike" or "Inward Turn." This book is not only for the very young hitter, there are sections on pitch recognition, offensive strategies, and the mental aspects of hitting. I highly recommend this book for dads or youth baseball coaches so they can teach their players proper, and easy to learn hitting technique, and have them remember, and use, the knowledge.
