Rethinking Thermoelectric Effects In Seebeck And Peltier Elements: Toward A Unifying Paradigm, by Michael Spry

This book emerged from work on an introductory text about thermoelectric (TE) technology--one that would review theory from the perspective of zero-sum energy balance right down to segments within TE elements. This would involve the resolution of temperature dependencies using finite element analysis, and the result would depend upon the maximum level of mathematical harmony among the effects. Energy balance would have to be demonstrated everywhere along the length of each semiconductor element. This work demanded a far greater degree of theoretical scrutiny than the common 'system-level' assessments which treat each element like a 'black box'.

Then came a surprising and very significant discovery--soon followed by additional findings which challenged fundamental concepts of thermoelectric theory. The pioneering TE work of William Thomson was ultimately drawn into question with strong indications that he had employed invalid assumptions and that many of his central ideas could not hold up against the demands of sub-element analysis.

In this thoroughly-illustrated and very comprehensive book, this 26-year veteran of the thermoelectric field explores his research and reveals new hypotheses which are in conformance with the balance of energy throughout individual TE elements--whether the technology is power generation or cooling. Using new-concept visual aids, he examines the codependency of temperature gradients and bulk properties, showing how they all interact within these technologies--and reviews the energy levels that would result with TE material in Thomson's classical experiments. Containing over 170 graphs and other illustrations plus highly-detailed descriptions of the algorithms employed in the computer models, Rethinking Thermoelectric Effects In Seebeck And Peltier Elements: Toward A Unifying Paradigm presents a truly integrated picture of thermoelectric property interactions. It can not only serve as a more substantial foundation for future theory, but provides illumination to enhance our understanding today.

This title is not available in a Kindle version due to the special challenges of  presenting equations in that format.  At such time as the capability of the protocols makes it more feasible to display such content in a consistent manner, a Kindle version will be offered.

From the Author
I can remember many times over my years in the thermoelectric industry, when I would hear a bold announcement of some development in the field and find that my BS Detector was pulsing loudly.  It was usually in synch with the comparable detection equipment of my colleagues, as we stood around and shook our heads.  This was the typical response to word about an astronomical increase in ZT or a claim of dramatic improvement in performance from an innovation in TE module structure.  We always sensed that these trumpeted leaps would be founded on errors in methodology or analysis; ultimately, the fanfare would be drowned in silence.

On rare occasions, I would be asked to "run the numbers" on proposed device enhancements, to see how the voltage and current levels played out with pellet geometries and bulk properties.  Sometimes this would even involve some rough computer modeling to arrive at interface temperatures along the way.  The results would almost never support the claims and I sometimes found that the design concepts were based on very naïve misunderstandings of thermoelectric technology.

Thus, I can understand that prospective readers might greet this project with similar reservations. Claims that a small shift in perspective can lead to profound insights--especially ones which challenge longstanding theoretical fundamentals--are just the sort of thing to trigger skepticism in any professional.   In this case, however, the findings come from a very thorough mathematical analysis using computer models which insure harmony with the Laws of Thermodynamics everywhere along the length of a TE element. These models have been checked and rechecked repeatedly for consistency and balance (they are thoroughly detailed within the book for those readers who wish to examine them).  While there are a few hypotheses based on band theory which are subject to further refinement, the conceptual frameworks have been meticulously developed and challenged every step of the way by a demanding skeptic--myself.

I readily acknowledge, though, that this book is not for everybody. Obviously first and foremost, a reader must have an interest in thermoelectricity and its fundamental theories. There must be at least a superficial understanding of the role of bulk material properties and their temperature dependencies. Beyond that:

  • The reader must have an open mind.  Of course this is necessary for all people in scientific disciplines.
  • The reader must accept the prospect that very subtle shifts in perspective, can reveal profound insights.  Sometimes habitual ways of examining problems, can blind us to underlying realities--or so oversimplify those realities that we cannot see root causes or complex interactions.
  • The reader must believe in the Laws of Thermodynamics and the Laws of Physics, that any thermoelectric (TE) phenomena must be consistent with these laws, and that this consistency must be evident everywhere within a TE system.  The fundamental perspective of the book is based on assuring a level of energy balance on a micro scale throughout a TE element rather than being content with indications of balance in terms of averages, estimates, target values, and ignoring temperature dependency.
  • The reader must believe that it is possible to find--using mathematics and computer algorithms--a state of operation for a TE system which will assure complete harmony with physical laws and temperature dependencies of material properties.
  • The reader must accept the principle that even longstanding theories and hypotheses, are not unassailable and may prove faulty in the light of new discoveries and examinations of mathematical and theoretical consistency.
  • Readers who possess these traits and who have the competence to deal with thermoelectrics from the perspective of bulk properties, should be suitable candidates for exploring this book.  Furthermore, I would suggest that they have a responsibility to read this book because of what is found here and its importance to the field.  For example, while it is not the central focus of the study or the text, the work ultimately uncovered the fact that William Thomson was mistaken about his proposed "third effect".  He was incorrect that there was another thermoelectric property of current beyond Peltier Effect, and that it explained a difference in energy levels when current flowed from cold to hot versus hot to cold.  His work only demonstrated the existence of that disparity in energy levels; it did not prove the presence of the effect. Readers of this book will learn how the four basic bulk properties easily account for the differences which Thomson explored--there was no need for "Thomson Effect".  This is just the most 'dramatic' implication which comes out of the book--there are others--and it was hardly an expectation when the project was begun.
I suggest that readers check any cynicism at the front cover and freely consider the content as it is offered. The concepts are slowly and progressively developed in great detail to make logical points.  I have strived to make the book one of the most thorough presentations on thermoelectric fundamentals and interactions to date.  It should prove quite enlightening.

    Enjoy!

    About the Author
Michael Spry brings a somewhat unorthodox background into this project. He earned a BS in psychology from Michigan State University in 1974 and was a practicing social worker for five and a half years before undertaking studies in electronics.  He earned an AAS in electronics technology in 1982 and spent four years at Northwestern Michigan College as an instructional assistant and full-time instructor in the ET program.

In 1987, the author became one of the first staff members hired for a fledgling Tellurex Corporation.  Over the next 24-years, he enjoyed a multifaceted career in the thermoelectric industry, designing products, production & test equipment, engineering software, computer models & analytical tools, and writing much of the company's web-based educational material.  He became one of the chief experts on analysis of power generation systems and custom thermoelectric modules.
Spry left Tellurex in September of 2011 after a reorganization, and began the work which led to Rethinking Thermoelectric Effects In Seebeck and Peltier Elements:  Toward A Unifying Paradigm.   Over the course of the next two years, he developed concepts of longitudinal energy balance with respect to operational thermoelectric elements, assuring that the Laws of Thermodynamics were satisfied throughout. Supported by his own computer models, his work led to a series of discoveries, hypotheses, and insights which impacted upon fundamental theory.  The first edition was published in November of 2013.
The author is also a novelist and author of other non-fiction works.  In addition to his solo books, he has contributed to anthologies and periodicals.
