About the Author

Yufeng Zhou is an assistant professor at the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He earned his BS and MS in electrical science and engineering from Nanjing University, China, in 1996 and 1999, respectively, and a PhD in mechanical engineering from Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, in 2003. Dr. Zhou’s research interests are focused on biomedical ultrasound, including ultrasound diagnosis (i.e., elastography) and therapy (i.e., shock wave lithotripsy to break calculus, high-intensity focused ultrasound for cancer ablation, ultrasound-mediated drug/gene delivery). He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and an advisory editorial board member of the journal Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology.

Fantastic!

I bought this book as a back to school gift for my 11 year old niece and ended up reading it myself. The stories are so true-to-life that anyone at any age can identify with them. I can't wait to give it to my niece; I know she'll love it!

You have to read this book

"What do I remember most about school?" is the first question asked in the introduction of the fiction book Tripping over the Lunch Lady: and Other School Stories edited by Nancy Mercado. This book features ten different school stories written by ten different children's book authors, including Angela Johnson, author of Toning the Sweeps and Heaven, both winners of a Coretta Scott King Award, Avi author of the True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, winner of a Newberry Honor Award and Terry Trueman's author of Struck in Neutral, winner of a Michael L. Printz Honor Award.
I thought that this book was a great, easy read, and of course hilarious. Even though the target audience is middle schoolers, however people of all ages would enjoy reading this book because somehow they can relate. I found myself remember all the fun and not so fun times of middle school while reading. Also, after reading each story, I found myself going back to that first question asked in the introduction "What do I remember most about school?" and being happy that nothing as crazy as these stories happened to me while I was in middle school. The stories range from ones about the troubles of gym class, the mystery of the smell in the desk and a boy's grandmother who always yells "bussa." My favorite story had to be How I got my English A by Avi which is about a boy who is not quiet an expert at English. He says things like "I can harldy spel the alfabet," I sez. One day him and his teacher get held hostage when they go down to the basement and things only get crazy from there when they encounter a guy who also isn't great at English. By the end of the story I couldn't stop laughing, and after you read it, you won't be able to as well. So How did he get his English A? Which of the ten authors says that the worse smell at school was kids throwing up in the closet? Why is the grandma always yelling "bussa" in the story The Grade School Zone? Find out by reading Tripping Over the Lunch Lady and Other School Stories which has been said to be "In this collection of hilarious short stories, we get a double-dose of laughter, along with a side of goulash, served up by top-flight writers..."-ALAN Review and that "Students will likely see themselves in these 10 appetizing stories about the ups and many downs of school life . . . Fun for the family

I read this recently with my 2nd grader. The cover on this looked like so much fun I figured I'd give it a try. I was afraid my 7 year old would be too too young for these stories but he LOVED them. We're also very excited to have found a new author that we really like -- David Lubar! "Are too, are not, R2-D2" a line from Lubar's story which is constantly recited at our house. We also really enjoyed the mini author bios at the end of each story.

Combining Psychedelics and Meditation as a Spiritual Path

This is the first book I've run across which suggested marijuana as an aid on the spiritual path. There are many books out there on the use of LSD, ayahuasca, san pedro cactus, mushrooms, etc., for the same purpose.

The style is simple, clear, and direct. The author and his mentor are not academics. They are people who did not fit in with conventional society, who struggled to find their life path, and they express the wisdom they have gained in a very down-to-earth way. This is much more than how-to book; it is also the story of two people heavily into marijuana who found in Eastern philosophy a spiritual and practical way of life.

The author and his mentor, who calls himself Lao Two, are obviously knowledgeable about Eastern philosophy, and the book cites classic texts, as well as authentic teachers such as Krishnamurti and Shunryu Suzuki.

According to the author, using psychedelics without meditation does not lead to anything but a momentary good time. Instead, the book suggests alternating between getting REALLY stoned, and meditating while not stoned. The meditations utilize the loosening of mental habits and the uprush of subconscious material resulting from the high for permanent and progressive spiritual growth.

I believe meditation by itself, like psychedelics by themselves, can also be a dead end and an escape. For most people, including myself, it is difficult to maintain meditation at the intensity needed for spiritual progress. To intensify meditation, many shamanic traditions have used psychedelics.

As the book mentions, the author's methods are not going to work for everyone. Shakti Gawain, who wrote a number of books on spiritual topics, has described how her use of marijuana caused alarming behavior while high and psychological dependency. Marijuana may not work for you. But another psychedelic may, and psychedelics are not the only route to intensity. Meditation retreats, breathing techniques, sensory deprivation, fasting, and other methods can intensify meditation and/or induce altered states. I use psychiatrist Stan Grof's simple holotropic breathing technique. I combine each session of holotropic breathing, which is a powerful releaser of subconscious material, with many subsequent days when I practice mindfulness meditation immediately upon awakening, which dissolves the emotions/feeling tones/tensions which have surfaced during the night.

To paraphrase Allan Hunt Badiner in the book "Zig Zag Zen," what is our ultimate goal - altered states or altered traits?

I'd also love to see a book which tackled marijuana and the spiritual path more from the shamanic side, the story of someone attempting to grow spiritually via conscious interactions with the spirit of the plant (if there indeed is one).

Perfect book for spiritual stoners

Alright, so I must admit that I'm sort of a philosophy/spirituality addict.. I've read countless books on Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and philosophy (currently I identify most as being a Buddhist). And I must say that this is one of the best books I've ever read.

The author is an old hippy dude that's smoked tons of bud in his life, and is also super into meditation and Eastern philosophy/spirituality. What he teaches in his book is essentially Buddhism, although not exactly Buddhism - for he supports the usage of marijuana and other psychedelics as spiritual tools, which does not play a significant role in Buddhism by any means. What's so great about this book is that the author is an amazing writer - everything he says is very direct, simple, plain and intuitive, while still overflowing with rich meaning. This dude is one wise man. I've read many books on Buddhism and Eastern Philosophy and this dude is one of the best at explaining some of the difficult concepts that Buddhism has. I think the reason I like it so much is because he's so down to earth and easy to relate too - he's a normal guy like you and me who wants to make sense out of life, and like you and me, turned to marijuana and meditation to try and find some meaning... I think one turn off of some of the super popular Buddhism books out there is that it's harder to relate to the authors.. although the authors might live simple lives, the lives the live are quite different than the ones we live... whereas I find it incredibly easy to relate to this author.

There are so many stoners out there who feel lost and confused but who have a deep desire to find rich meaning and purpose out of life. The old answers that Religion has provided for the big questions about life just simply aren't working anymore for a significant amount of today's youth, people are turning to marijuana and meditation, among other things, to try to expand their minds and make sense and meaning out of the mystery of existence. This book offers some of the best and most honest advice/ guidance for stoners and people interested in Buddhism, meditation, spirituality, etc. Check it out and be sure to tell your friends about this book!

Uncompelling case, but important points, with sarcastic tone

I lack formal finance training, so I read a lot of finance books to expand my knowledge and thereby advance my career as a closely-held business valuation analyst. In this book, I found some important challenges to the efficient market hypothesis. The most important challenge (for my work) is the author's challenge to a small company risk premium (doesn't exist, as I understand him). The author's case against EMH is not compelling, however, and I honestly don't know whether it is the author or his case that is uncompelling. His writing style emits sarcasm; his attempt to be funny is distracting. I really didn't find much humor in comments like, "Value stocks might be plagued by sleeping monsters." He gets almost flippant (and incoherent) with this about the famous Fama and French study: "The Pope said God was dead. At least the God of CAPM. The God of the Fantasy was, apparently, very much alive." His case is not completely made, and I intend to buy another of his books to see if he makes it more completely elsewhere. I should admit that another (more important) reason I am planning to buy another book by Haugen is that he is cited in The Complete Finance Companion - The Latest in Financial Principles and Practice from the World's Best Finance Schools.

A mixed-message

I read Haugen's book as an finance undergraduate. At the time I found the material quite compelling. As I go about reading the book some 9 years later, I now see some of the common criticisms as valid.

As a student, the material was brought to life by an excellent professor at Michigan State University. He was able to provide additional evidence and support for Haugen's arguement. Without the benefit of a good professors insights, the book does seem arrogant to a point of distraction. Not only is arrogance an issue but Haugen's writing style is hardly even par for the academic tome it claims to be.

My opinion of the material has not changed. I still find Haugen's point of view compelling and persuasive. I just find it unfortunate that so many will be left un-convinced primarily due to issues of style. If you choose to read this book, try your best not to reject the message along with the messenger.

FYI, I believe "Qualified Opinion" from NY was wrong when he desribed how EMH means market-superior returns are possible. EMH should mean that all information is priced into securities and thus, it is impossible to beat the market. Haugen's theory rejects this and suggests that due to market innefficiencies, superior returns are possible by choosing a Value strategy. Efficient market hypothesis is also referred to as "random walk" theory because it results in an inability to chart the market. Proponents of EMH suggest selecting Index funds to simply accept the market return.

Poorly Written and Thoughtless

"The New Finance" has basically everything going against it.
First, Haugen's writing style is annoying and childish. An engaging use of humor and metaphor are apparently beyond his skill.
Second, Haugen's story is unconvincing. The case against the efficient market hypothesis has been made much more rigorously and interestingly by other authors (e.g. Andrei Shleifer, Hersh Shefrin, and Richard Thaler, among others). Haugen in some case makes mountains out of statistical molehills and misses vital information in others. In short, Haugen is neither convincing nor complete in his critique. The field of economics covered here has a name, by the way, which Haugen never once cites: behavioral finance.
Third, in many cases Haugen is just plain wrong in his assertions. The cases are too numerous to count, but I'll give two examples from page 12. First, Haugen asserts that if no one uses the CAPM to construct their portfolios then markets cannot be efficient. This is not true. The efficient market hypothesis can hold, as Milton Friedman pointed out, if people act AS IF they use the CAPM, even if they don't really use it. Second, of evidence that markets generally react to new information quickly and without bias, Haugen says "Not true." Which is overstating the case, if not outright misrepresenting it. While there is some evidence of investor overreaction and/or underreaction, the case is far from closed. Moreover, anecdotal evidence of occasional over- and under-reaction does not prove the efficient market hypothesis to be a "Fantasy," as Haugen claims.
Fourth, and this point is somewhat related to the third, Haugen is far too full of himself. Assertions of his own intellectual superiority cloud his arguments and reasoning. This can be dangerous when dueling with men like Eugene Fama, Harry Markowitz, Bill Sharpe, and Milton Friedman. More importantly, it leaves Haugen apparently very comfortable making blanket, absolute statements about financial economics that no self-respecting, respected, or respectful economist has any business making. And I say that not only because Haugen is very frequently wrong. It also isn't very becoming. And since the material in this book is reviewed in far superior books, there is little reason to pay much attention to Haugen and his rantings.
