Honor Bound, a collaborative effort researched and written over the course of more than a decade by historian Stuart Rochester and Air Force Academy professor and POW specialist Frederick Kiley, combines rigorous scholarly analysis with a moving narrative to record in unprecedented detail the triumphs and tragedies of the several hundred servicemen (and civilians) who fought their own special war in North and South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia between 1961 and 1973.

The authors address a gamut of subjects from the physical ordeal of torture and deprivation that required clarification of the Code of Conduct to the sometimes more onerous psychological challenges of indoctrination, adjustments to new routines and relationships, and mere coping and passing time under the most monotonous, inhospitable conditions. The volume weaves a winding trail through scores of prison camps, from large concrete compounds in the North to isolated jungle stockades in the South to mountain caves in Laos, while tracing political developments in Hanoi and Washington and the evolution of the “psywar” that placed the prisoners at the center of the conflict even as they were removed from the battlefield.

From courageous resistance and ingenious methods of organization and communication to failed escapes and questionable conduct —“warts and all”— Honor Bound examines in depth the longest and perhaps most remarkable prisoner-of-war captivity in U.S. history.

Stuart I. Rochester, a longtime historian with the Secretary of Defense Historical Office who holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, is the author of many books.

Triumph of the human spirit

A brilliant, highly accessible account of the history of the POWs in Southeast Asia. The text is very readable and concisely written. The photographs alone speak volumes and the maps provide a nice illustrative point of reference.
Before you read any other POW-related book, take the time to read "Honor Bound" cover to cover. Not only will you feel you are getting to know these men - heroes all - personally, you will gain a brutally clear perception of the conditions these men were forced to endure and the way they managed to maintain their honor and dignity in the face of such terrible adversity. The human element is very strong.
This is not, mind you, a book for the weak-stomached. The book is unflinching in its cataloging of the various tortures the POWs underwent, the often rancid food they were forced to subsist on, and the day to day challenges their captors and the climate inflicted upon them.
Surprisingly, however, while the reader is horrified, he or she will leave the book strangely uplifted. It reaffirms one's faith in the human spirit and humanity in general.

The truth captured on paper

As a Vietnam veteran and friend of several POW's I found that this book told their story better than any I have read to date. It took me back to times when I sat with those friends and they told me of the terrible times they went through. This book will bring you as close to being able to share in their experience and my visits with my friends as you will ever get.

Thank you to Stuart Rochester and Frederick Kiley, for an unbelievable account of the POW's that served in Viet Nam. This is not an easy book to read, but it is a page-turner. As an American, I am overwhelmed by the sacrafice extended for the freedom I enjoy. My praise for the written words and for the service to our country so clearly evident in this riveting book. G.K. 'Gabriel' is the captivating second book in a young adult paranormal series that continues to leave fans of the genre begging for more. It continues to follow Lailah - our main character - as she comes back to life yet again. Only this time, she knows her true nature and has accepted it, which allows her to retain the majority of her memories from the past few years, including the truth behind her connection with Gabriel and the dual nature of her being. Along with the truth and memories, Lailah is able to keep both her Angel and her Vampire attributes at the same time - meaning she's the only being that can retain her form in all three dimensions. Lailah and Gabriel decide to stay off of the Arch Angels and the Vampire's radars, because once they know she's alive again - both sides will come after her.

I read and absolutely loved the first book in this series, so I did have pretty high hopes and expectations for this second installment. I'm happy to say that I wasn't disappointed in the least. It lived up to any hopes I had and then blew them away. I loved every single bit of this book - from the characters to the various settings and time periods, to the vivid details and history of the vampires, the angels, and of Lailah herself. During the first book, I couldn't seem to get enough background about the Vampires or Angels - and most of all - the mystery of Lailah herself. My intrigue only deepened after finishing the first book and while reading this one. I devoured this novel in a few short hours because I seriously couldn't - and wouldn't - stop reading until I had completely finished. The characters continued to be complex with distinct personalities and made all the more realistic with their flaws and strengths. I loved getting to know even more about Lailah and her story - all of the lives she's lived, how she came to be a mixture of both realms, and all the other intricate details about her. Of course, I also continued to adore the other two major characters - Gabriel and Jonah - throughout the book. Watching them each grow personally along with their complex relationships with one another was fascinating. As I mentioned, the storybuilding was beyond fantastic. The vivid imagery along with all the details and descriptions made it incredibly easy for me to fall back into Lailah's world early on.

The plot was magnificent - it continues to be unique and completely different from most other stories out there, which is saying a lot because of the overwhelming amount of titles in the YA fantasy/paranormal genre. There were just a few times in the book that annoyed me for one reason or another - I can't even put them together collectively because they were each different reasons and didn't have an overall effect on my reading experience. I personally can't get enough of this series - I'm in love with every single aspect of it; the characters, story line, histories, romance - I could go on and on. I seriously can't recommend this book (or series) highly enough to those who enjoy YA paranormal and fantasy, as well as readers who are looking for a unique and refreshing story among those like it in the genre. I'm seriously already dying for the next installment to see what will happen next. I honestly don't know how I'm going to survive the long wait until the next book is released. I need it now! Seriously though, you need to read this book (series) NOW, if you haven't already. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Action-packed and Fast-paced Recommended for YA Paranormal Aficionados!

KYLA: I have been waiting for a year to read Gabriel and finally THE WAIT IS OVER. If you'd ask if the wait was worth it then I'd say yes, it definitely was. Because, duh, #TeamGabrielFTW.

CARMEL: To be honest, I was hesitant to read Gabriel because I LOVE LAILAH (book 1) SOOO MUCH. As Kyla and I both started, the book was leading to our ship #TEAMGABRIEL. We were happy and giddy!

KYLA: The beginning of Gabriel was pretty fun, there was action already which I love. Plus if you're on #TeamGabriel, you'll surely enjoy it.

CARMEL: I have never been this dedicated and passionate to a pair. You have no idea how much I ship Gabriel and Lailah. For me, Nikki Kelly made the love triangle work.

KYLA: It was indeed a great YA paranormal romance novel, it did not disappoint me. I love everything about it except when Lailah (the MC) gets annoying. To clear some things, Lailah is not a horrible main character. She's just always jealous of something or someone.

CARMEL: I get where you are coming from, but it's part of Lailah's journey I guess. She's part dark and part light. There would be things that confuses her. It's all part of the story. I'm excited on where these things lead. Of course, we can't spoil the events! They would have to read Lailah and Gabriel. *whispers: read the books*

KYLA:Well, because Lailah did something! She always does something that makes it all bad. And that's all I can say since I don't want to spoil it for you.

CARMEL: Such a tease! Whatever she decides to do whether bad or good, I don't care as long as Lailah chooses Gabriel! I won't ever give up on my OTP! I think this book is ultimately about choices. Will Lailah choose her dark side? Will the people around her support her decision or will it just divide them? This book is essential to the whole series and it should not be missed!

KYLA: So yes, I loved Gabriel. WE BOTH LOVED IT! It definitely had twists that blew my mind and broke my heart. YES. THIS BOOK BROKE MY HEART. I swear, after reading the book, I wanted to cry and punch someone. But I didn't do those things because I decided to focus on the brighter side of the book instead.

CARMEL: Definitely heartbreaking! Nikki, what did you do to my fragile heart?! NOOOOOOOOO! I could not believe what I read! I was just there staring blankly. I could not react. How could you react to that?! *cries a river*

VERDICT:As usual, Nikki Kelly delivered the book amazingly. I need the third book now, Nikki! Gabriel is action-packed and fast-paced filled with twists that will blow your mind and break your heart at the same time. I definitely recommend this series to those YA paranormal romance aficionados out there! GO FORTH AND READ IT!

A winning follow-up to Lailah!

Gabriel is the exciting second book in the Styclar Saga, the follow-up to Lailah. As the title of this one suggests, it expands on Gabriel’s character – the angel who is the other half of Lailah’s light – her soul mate, if you will. The book is still told through Lailah’s POV, as she discovers that the people (and angels and vampires) around her are willing to sacrifice everything for her – she just isn’t sure that her life is worth the sacrifice.

What fed my addiction:

Lailah’s acceptance of her darker side.
While the synopsis claims that this book is about Gabriel, I would contend that it’s actually more about Lailah accepting all of who she is, despite her love for Gabriel and her desire to please him. Now that Lailah knows that the dark woman from the first book is a part of her, she has to learn to tame that darkness and she sometimes has to learn to embrace it.
Answers. We get quite a few new pieces to the puzzle in this book and learn more about Lailah’s abilities, her family and her purpose. I can’t wait to see where Kelly goes with the story next!

Jonah.
When Lailah wakes up from being brought back to life (in the first book) she has no memory of Jonah for some reason. So she struggles between feeling like she owes him in some way and sensing that he wants something more from her – something she’s not willing to give. Jonah responds much like Jonah does – he sacrifices for her, but also pushes her away, unwilling to accept less than her love and bitter about the fact that she doesn’t remember him. I loved any part of the story that focused on Jonah. Guess I’m rooting for the bad boy in this series – but it’s simply because he accepts Lailah for who she is – all of her – and he still puts Lailah first, just like Gabriel does. Jonah’s darker nature doesn’t make him seem like a dark character, and I’m pretty much always on his side.

The ending.
The book ends in a way that puts some things to rights (in my opinion) and also propels Lailah in a new and very interesting direction!

What left me wanting more:

The focus on Gabriel.
My problem with a book that focuses on Gabriel is that he’s just not all that likable. It really seems like the only reason he’s in love with Lailah is because he was born to love her, and while his willingness to do anything for her is commendable, it just never feels like he’s doing it for the absolute right reasons. And it seems a bit like he’s holding Lailah back because she just wants to please him so badly. Now, I will say that all of these things were completely by design – intentional decisions made by Kelly to drive the story forward – but that didn’t stop them from bugging me a little bit. I kind of wanted to get past the Gabriel parts and see Lailah’s personal journey or her story with Jonah.

This book is a fantastic follow-up to Lailah that leads us into even darker territory. I give it 4/5 stars.

Great Book

I read the other reviews about the spelling and editing. I was reading this so fast that it didn't bother me. I really couldn't put the book down. I have heard of this but was curious. MAN OH MAN. Can only imagine the research that was done for this story. I hope the next book comes out soon. I have started re-reading the book.

About the Author

Stephen Witmer (PhD, University of Cambridge) is the pastor of Pepperell Christian Fellowship in Pepperell, Massachusetts, and adjunct professor of New Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He is the author of Eternity Changes Everything: How to Live Now in the Light of Your Future.

J. I. Packer (DPhil, Oxford University) serves as the Board of Governors’ Professor of Theology at Regent College. He is the author of numerous books, including the classic best-seller Knowing God. Packer served as general editor for the English Standard Version Bible and as theological editor for the ESV Study Bible.

Dane C. Ortlund (PhD, Wheaton College) is executive vice president of Bible publishing and Bible publisher at Crossway. He serves as an editor for the Knowing the Bible series and the Short Studies in Biblical Theology series, and is the author of several books, including Edwards on the Christian Life. He lives with his wife, Stacey, and their four kids in Wheaton, Illinois.

Lane T. Dennis is president and publisher of Crossway Books and Good News Tracts. Dr. Dennis earned his BS in business from Northern Illinois University, an MDiv from McCormick Theological Seminary, and a PhD in religion from Northwestern University. A great love story that will capture your heart!

Melissa Blue has done it again: made me absolutely adore the sexy Scotsmen she creates. Marcus, our ruthless CEO who's pretending to be a handyman to get the company and the position he wants, is very, very sexy. And he thinks he doesn't have the capacity to fall in love. Now, I usually avoid any stores about ruthless businessmen, because they usually bore me. But Marcus and his backstory are quite intriguing. And then there is Ivy--who is a virgin even those she's closing in on thirty--but she's not one of these insipid ones that goes around saying "holy cow!" or talking about her "inner goddess". She's kickass and she feels authentic and real.

What I really enjoyed about Scot Appeal (and the entire Under the Kilt series) is that the relationships and the conflicts the main characters experience feels very grounded and realistic. These are adults dealing with adult problems and behaving like proper adults and not as overgrown teenagers. And the way race is addressed is very subtle without it becoming an overblown sticking point.

Following this story of unlikely neighbors who become lovers was so much fun. I admit: I ignored my yummy Swedish hubby to finish reading this book and he was a good sport about it. I will have to make it up to him this weekend. :)

I loved Scot Appeal and the chemistry between Marcus and Ivy, and I think you will too.

Love those Scots!

This is the 5th installment in the Under the Kilt series and it doesn't disappoint. Marcus is a flawed hero (what better one is there...lol) with some issues regarding love and his ability to give it. He's plotting his next move work wise when he meets Ivy, the heroine and his next door neighbor. Their witty banter and sexual tension was immediate but the fact that Ivy is a virgin is what twists the plot of this story a bit. I loved Ivy and Marcus together and enjoyed seeing how they fit so well together though they both tried their best to keep it casual and unattached. Melissa Blue didn't disappoint in the steaminess of this couple's scenes which were hot! I also loved that we got to get a glimpse of the lives of the rest of the Baird men and their loves. I thought this was a great read and hope the author continues this series with more hot Scotsmen.

I love her writing and I love those Scots!!!! Hot.
For as beautiful as ther are they also have their heart aches and burdens. Marcus was troubled man who thinks he doesn't deserve love or needs it. Ivy has taken her Grandmother's life word on love and marriage to heart which leaves her a 28 year old virgin. Wondering how time has passed her by. She had this idea that the perfect mad would in on a unicorn and marry her...good luck with that honey.We get to witness these two journey into love in spite of their selves..
I enjoyed their story but at times Ivy seemed a bit childish. Giggling mess around her sister sometimes and had a lot of questions most times for him.Women who want answers but don't particularly want to give any.

Change And The Generation Gap

Adolescence is a time in which the behaviors of childhood are abandoned and the roles of adulthood are taken up. This book describes the different ways in which youths arrive at their adult roles.

In very stable, unchanging cultures youths learn from both their parents and their grandparents how to act as adults. These are postfigurative cultures, thus named because they look back to the past for guidance. Many native cultures were postfigurative before they gained access western culture via radio and TV.

Societies which exist in a state of change are called cofigurative cultures. Many western cultures in the twentieth century are examples of this. In this circumstance both youths and adults learn from their peers. Much of the past must be abandoned as new circumstances arrive demanding new behaviors.

Mead proposes that a third, prefigurative culture may emerge in the future. This type of society is subject to continued, radical change. In it adults learn from their children. Youths have the adaptability to cope with rapid change. They must 'make up' their behavior as they go along. Peers can help but even they remain largely ignorant of 'what is right' as change is so rapid.

This book was written just after the counter-culture of the 1960s. At the time it must have seemed that the world was going to experience an alarming rate of change. As a result of the baby boom youth seemed to be taking over the world. Prefigurative culture never eventuated but of course that is not to say it can never happen.
