Lots of nice ideas and recipes for Valentines Day

I enjoyed reading through this book. It has a lot of nice, "G-rated" ideas in it and quite a few recipes in it. If they mentioned a recipe, they included it. The ideas and recipes were low-cost. The recipes included were able to feed a family or just the two of you - your choice. There were also ideas for kids - both for them personally and things they could make/do for family and/or friends.

I didn't see any grammatical or spelling errors, though I read fast and sometimes a spelling error will get past me. I downloaded the book for free and read it in my Kindle Cloud Reader.

When I got to the end, I saw that there were about 33 pages left in the book and thought that it was another case of an author padding the page count. Turns out, there were 4 pages of ads for other books and their website and 2 pages of legal stuff. Don't know what happened, but I clicked each page and watched the page count jump several pages at a time. So there is some kind of formatting error or glitch at the end. And the pages of ads were actually about 1 to 3 books on each page, not page after page of them. Other than that, the only other formatting problem was that on some of the recipes, the ingredient/amount column wasn't straight. For me, it's not a problem, but some people might notice and be bothered by it. Other than these two issues, the formatting was good. No "funny" characters for missing punctuation or other problems that can make text hard to read.

I will note that there are 2 Bible verses quoted towards the end of the book. They were not "proselytizing" verses but about love. I wasn't offended, but I do know that there are people out there that would be, as anything religious seems to sets some people off.

Fun For The Entire Family

If you are looking for a book that has inexpensive ideas for the entire family then you are going to love this book. There are lots of cute ideas and some very clever ones, like how to easily decorate a cake. I also liked the tips on how to keep flowers fresh. That tip alone is worth the price of the book. If you have kids then there are plenty of ideas on how to make your kids feel special. I also liked the ideas about the treasure hunt. There is also a good idea in this book about what to give a teacher for Valentine's Day. The recipes also sound delicious. I'm looking forward to trying some of the recipes in the near future. I also thought this book had some very funny moments. This book proves that you don't have to be rich to make Valentine's Day fun for everyone. All the ideas seemed very inexpensive.

AS ALWAYS, AMAZING AND EFFECTIVE

I LOVED this book - as a person who has been researching the LOA phenomenon for years, I have found that Kelli Cooper has the most effective and failproof methods, advice and insights I have ever come across. Kelli has a brilliant writing style I have never seen before and it gets right down into your soul and makes a lasting impression. Kelli speaks to you the way your best, best friend would. No B.S., no fairy dust, that's what I like most about her writing style. Letting go has always been the biggest challenge for me and I can say that after reading this, my manifestations are coming more easily even though its only been a few days! I'm not even kidding; I am much more relaxed and confident about my abilities, so thank you so much Kelli, I look forward to the rest of the series!

This book clarifies a lot about allowing manifestations and has plenty of examples that you can relate with and apply to your own situation. I have had Amazon Prime for 2 years, buy tons of items - first review ever. The info in this book is no longer relevant - skip it. It has all exercises - like if you've ever taken technical training in a classroom where you do one exercise after another.

The chapter on locking down Microsoft IIS is for version 4 - version 7 is current now in 2012. It is all screen shots and exercises from 2002 era software. I am a current CISSP, and buy tons of books with prime, in engineering grad school - this is the only non-recommendation ever. Can't believe it is still being sold, nice book in 2002 - not 2012.

good book, but not always accurate

If you don't have any security background then this book is a good place to start. Be ready, however, for most of the links to be out of date (the book was published in 2002). This can be circumvented by a little help from Google to find the utilities you need for the exercises. There are also a few inaccuracies in the syntax provided. These can be resolved with help from "man" (i.e. 'man ipchains') or the help for the particular utility.

As a network/security professional I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the what's & hows of network/IT security. I'd recommend it just as much to any security team or professional as an "on the desk" reference for every day use. An invaluable tool, reference and teacher for those willing to delve deep and take the time to read (and play....).

An under read classic.

Within the first few pages, it becomes apparent quickly that Manhattan Transfer is not a traditional novel. Dos Passos presents a collage of New York City in the 1920's that even 75 years later describes well the modern city. His technique of jumping from character to character as they interact with each other within the city as some succeed and others fail provides a bleak, yet at the same time oddly wonderful reading. His injection of newspaper ads, songs, and advertisements captures so well the bustle of large cities. I can only wonder why he is often left out of the "canon" of American Modernists. It does take adjustment to read Manhattan Transfer, but you will be more than rewarded for your efforts.

This book helped create "Modernism" in literature...but it's also a good read
By Reading as Much as I Can
This book is an excellent read, but it does highlight some of the problems with the early phase of so-called "Modern" writing. Passos is trying hard (perhaps too hard) to describe everything going on around him over a period of several years. That's a hefty task for a novelist and no one has done it much better (except Leo Tolstoi).

Unlike Tolstoi, though, John Dos Passos never gets very far into the minds and motivations of his characters. Like Tolstoi, he has a cast of hundreds, but he is not as deft at giving even some of the recurring characters the realistic motivations and sympathetic treatment that Tolstoi does. One does want to like or feel something for *some* of the characters in a novel. Maybe we want to dislike or even hate an occasional character. It's probably part of Passos's scheme to have none of that sort of thing in Manhattan, but he does early on introduce the rather sympathetic character of Ed. Red herring, really. Ed will disappear into Manhattan, his concerns and doings of only tangential importance within another 100 pages. I'm sure that literary critics have created an industry of trying to connect Ellen/Elaine's doings up with Ed's, somehow, but really, Ed is just an average guy with an average baby in an average setting in early 20th century Manhattan.

Upon rereading some of it, I get the feeling that Passos did not know where most of his characters were going or whether they would turn up again in the book. It seems as if he knew he needed some of them to recur, to make it a novel rather than a very extended book of vignettes and sketches. He does sketches very well. Most of us would be delighted to find ourselves able to write such sketches, but, like John Dos Passos, even if we could, we would not find a publisher. We could blog our sketches, and it struck me that Passos is something like an early blogger. Lots of impressionistic, day-to-day observations, strung together mostly by the fact that one person is writing them down. The sudden development of dramatic plot lines (and their very rapid denouements) means that you can't just start reading near the back and "get" the story (unlike a blog), but that's one of the few things that makes it different from blogging.

We have lots of great observers out there in the cyberworld, observing and writing. John Dos Passos took a chance when he decided to make a living making these kinds of observations. We are indebted to him, forever, for these glimpses of the World's Second Metropolis and for those glimpses, alone, this book is more than worthwhile. Whether you love Manhattan, as I do, or you hate it, you will still enjoy much of this book. You'll also likely find yourself wanting to skim certain sections, just as you'd wish the person in the next cubicle would stop some irritating habit, you'll find some of the characters irritating. They are, however, quite real in their ability to irritate and that's something to accomplish. He's far deeper into personalities, personality types and dialects than, say, Hemingway.

This book also set up many decades of further fictions about New York City, so in that regard, it's also a must read.

Lots of energy but fades into history like the buggy whip

Ask anyone about the 1920's and they may think Jazz Age, Prohibition, Babe Ruth, Hemingway, Fitzgerald maybe Faulkner. Only a minority would throw John Dos Passos into that ring but he was in fact a giant of the time. His "USA Trilogy" and "Manhattan Transfer" were recognized and awarded the same acclaim as writers we know so much better today.

Hemingway wrote that "Manhattan Transfer" finally gave the world the real picture of New York City. Alfred Döblin was deeply influenced by Dos Passos's style. He ran with the same crowd. Drank and partied with them all and yet almost a hundred years later his own fame is far eclipsed by so many others. Why?

A great novel needs great characters and a central theme or conflict. Dos Passos was writing about a time and place; New York City in the first part of the 20 century. His focus is on atmosphere. He wants you to feel the city through it's accents, bustle, the frustrations of daily life, the food and drink and the movement of cars, taxis, subways, street cars and boats of every kind. Through all that he wants to convey the energy that's bursting in every direction but he also wants to expose the contradictions of daily life; war veterans not getting their bonuses, women yearning for more opportunity, backstreet abortions, failed marriages, banks and businesses and later drinking during prohibition.

Characters come in go very briefly, re-appearing later. There are so many that it takes perhaps the first half of the book to keep it straight. For me it was hard to follow let alone develop an empathy or curiosity for them. It felt very flat. He uses major events of the day as a timeline but aside from war and prohibition much of those references are obscure and thus one tends to lose a sense of time passing that he was likely successfully conveying to his contemporaries.

My conclusion is that it's too ambitious and there is too little for the modern reader to grasp. By doing so much there are interesting points and poignant scenes. But too often I was flipping back to see if I had already jumped to yet another vignette and double checking if he'd jumped a few weeks, months or years. Pulling this out of a time capsule I enjoyed this as a 1925 novel of early New York but I wonder if it were the book that I'd want to say best depicted New York at that time and I'd conclude that other works have surpassed it.

About the Author
C. PETER WAGNER, PhD, holds graduate degrees in theology, missiology, and religion from Fuller Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, and the University of Southern California. He served as a field missionary in Bolivia for 16 years and he taught on the faculty of the School of Intercultural Studies at Fuller Seminary for 30 years. The author of 70 books, Wagner ministers extensively nationally and internationally from his home base in Colorado Springs.

This was extremely well researched yet readable. A little long winded, but thorough. The history of the first 1800 years of the church are well researched and and well thought out with great insight. Dr. Hamon is of course a great proponent of "present truth" churches and his reporting of restorations in the last 125 years reflect that belief. A lot of his discussions of the last 65 years are his own personal experience of the changes God has brought to the church during that time. I learned a lot from this book.

A MUST!

By far the best book I have ever read about the Church of Christ. My eyes were open to see the big picture of God's plan for Christ and the Church. Our vision has been limited by our denominations or by a religious mindset and this book helps to break that, if the person is willing to see outside of their denomination and/or upbringing. For him/her that have ears to hear, let him/her hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Our destiny is bigger than what I thought previously, and this book helped me to see that.

The author, Dr. Bill Hamon is a respected prophetic voice to the Body of Christ, which adds to the creditability of the information he presents to the reader. Taking you on a journey of the church from the first century, through the Middle Ages to the present and beyond, you will understand what happened and may be more important, why, as Christ works to bring His church into maturity.
The book answered questions for me as a Christian and helped me to understand my history as a believer and gave a glimpse of where the Lord's church is going.

All in all, this is a very informative work, recommended for the Body of Christ, helping us to understand the works of the Lord, and the role we all play in bringing the drama to victory!

In this book Mark Harrison rebuilds and analyses the Soviet economy's wartime statistical record, examining its prewar size and composition, and wartime changes in GNP, employment, the defence burden, and the role of foreign aid. Complementing classic long-run growth studies, the book compares the Soviet experience with that of other great powers. It emphasises the severity of current costs and capital losses arising from the war, which had a negative effect on GNP that persisted well after 1945. The results are based on a comprehensive analysis of hitherto closed official documents, throwing new light on the dimensions of the Soviet war effort, the comparative economics of the war, and its long-term impact on the Soviet economy.

About the Author
Mark Harrison writes about the history and economics of Russia, conflict, defence and security. He is a Professor of Economics at the University of Warwick. He is also a research fellow of the Centre for Russian and East European Studies at the University of Birmingham and of the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace at Stanford University.

Dry and technical essential reading

This book is extremely dry and technical, and a background in economics and even mathematical concepts applied to economics is definitely recommended.
It is very much a book about macroeconomical aspects of the war: how it was financed, what did the decisions regarding manpower and other resource distribution issues imply, and so on. The wealth of information regarding these aspects of the Soviet war economy make it worthwhile for anybody interested in wartime economics, despite the heavy reading.
