About the Author
Suzanne Roy is a Professor of Biological Oceanography at the Institut des Sciences de la Mer of the Université du Québec ... Rimouski (Canada) and a member of Québec-Ocean. Over the last 20 years, Professor Roy has developed an expertise in the ecology and physiology of marine and estuarine phytoplankton, focusing on various aspects such as population dynamics of harmful algae, environmental impacts of aquaculture and ozone-related ultraviolet radiation effects. She also runs an analytical laboratory for the HPLC determination of algal pigments and UV-screening compounds. Her current research interests include the combined influence of climate warming and enhanced UV on phytoplankton communities, photoprotection and cell mortality in Arctic phytoplankton, and the transport of non-indigenous dinoflagellates in ships' ballast tanks. Several of these projects are part of Canada's major NSERC Research Networks such as CAISN and CFL. Professor Roy is a member of the Scientific Committee for the international Global Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms (GEOHAB) programme.

Einar Skarstad Egeland is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture at Bodø University College, Norway. He has a broad experience in organic chemical analysis (chromatography and spectroscopy). He is an internationally recognised scientist on carotenoid analysis from natural sources (mostly prasinophyte algae, but also other algal classes). Currently, he is involved in several cross-disciplinary research projects related to marine ecology, aquaculture and seafood quality. He is an active member of the Marine Ecology Group at Bodø University College.

Carole Llewellyn is a microbial biogeochemist at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, UK. She has experience in phytoplankton pigments and UV absorbing compounds spanning over 20 years. Her research interests are focused on understanding the role of phytoplankton in the ocean and more specifically on microbial and food web dynamics, microbial biodiversity, community composition and photophysiology. At an applied level, her research contributes to eutrophication and pollution studies and links with satellite remote-sensing and bio-optics. More recently she has used her knowledge on algae and pigments to contribute to the rapidly growing area of algal biotechnology.

Geir Johnsen is a Professor of Marine Biology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and an Adjunct Professor in marine bio-optics at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS). His major interests are the use of bio-optical methods in taxonomy, ecology and physiology of micro- and macroalgae. His main focus in the last 20 years has been on photosynthesis, light harvesting and utilization in algae and marine invertebrates with photosynthetic endosymbionts. Current interests include new approaches in in situ and remote sensing techniques for monitoring and mapping of planktonic and benthic organisms in the water surface, water column and sea floor.

Larry Eugene Jones is Professor of History at Canisius College, New York. After receiving his PhD from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1970, he held a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Bonn and a fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung Foundation at the University of the Ruhr in Bochum. His book, German Liberalism and the Dissolution of the Weimar Party System, 1919-1933 (1988), received a prize from the German Studies Association as the best book in history and political science over the preceding two years. He has since received major grants from the National Endowment of the Humanities, the National Humanities Center, the German Marshall Fund, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the American Philosophical Society, and the German Academic Exchange Service. He has edited and coedited a number of books, most recently The German Right in the Weimar Republic (2014).

Wonderfully written and thoroughly researched

This book is a masterpiece. Wonderfully written and thoroughly researched. Am personally a World-War-Two buff and I've read hundreds of books on the subject. One might ask after all this time, how much one can read about Hitler's Germany? But this superb study proves there's still much to learn. I read Mr Jones fine book eagerly plus i highly recommend it.

Dr. Howell has a training clinic for young doctors, and he also happens to specialize in correction. So when Violet, the young laundry maid, got caught pleasuring herself in the garden, she left her employer, Mr. Grigson no choice but to ask if the doctor was willing to take her on. Of course this type behavior (she was an exhibitionist and likely a slut) was not something that could be corrected immediately; it was going to take some time to explore her vices properly. The doctor administered various methods of arousal as the poor servant girl pretended modesty and embarrassment. There was one particular procedure, where he pushed a piece of freshly peeled ginger into the young maid’s bottom before a thorough paddling, that convinced me that she was in good hands. It now seems that Violet may be even more immoral than originally believed, and I certainly hope that proves to be true.

THE HIDDEN GIRL - by Lola Rein Kaufman

Lola Rein was just eight years old when her mother was shot and killed by a Gestapo soldier. Lola's grandmother sends her off with an Ukrainian woman who hides her in her home. The threat of being found out was always a possibility. Lola was moved to another place of hiding this time in a hole dug underneath a barn. The woman and her son had hidden Lola and three other Jewish people until they were liberated from the war. It's March 1944, and Lola is ten years old. She is free but yet majority of her family have been killed in the war. The only possession that she holds onto is her white knit embroidery dress her mother had made for her. She struggles to stay alive and hoping to connect with someone in her family. Will she find a safe place and members of her family?

It's hard to imagine what it would be like for a child to have that much resilience to fight to stay alive, especially during the Holocaust. A must read for those interested in the history of the Holocaust.

An eighth grader approved sentimental story

We are a group of eighth graders who read this book for a book club at school. We thought the book was very interesting. At first, we did not want to read it because we thought it would be boring. We ended up having a lot of connections with the book. The only problem we had with it was that it had a very sudden ending. We would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the Holocaust or likes autobiographies.
