Reprint.... Nothing New. Don't Bother...

If you do not already have the "new Harmony Guides" from Interweave Press (edited by Erika Knight) this book is for you: all volumes are republished here. If, however, you shelled out nearly a hundred bucks for all of the revised Harmony Guides, you will not be getting anything new here. A few stitches have been given new names for this book, but everything here is identical to the Harmony Guides, and not the old Guides! There still are NO charts, except for the cable stitches, same as the Interweave guides. Here was a second chance to add charts and make these guides actually useful, but..... Nope. This book is being returned. My shelf space is too limited to have multiple copies of all the same info. Had they added charts, I would keep it for sure. But there was no effort put forth here. Just a reprint designed solely for more sales. What a disappointment.

Reprint of the new Harmony Guides

I didn't even think to check this book against other stitch dictionaries before purchasing because I have no other dictionaries from this publisher. Turns out that this is a reprint of the new Harmony Guides from Interweave Press. I'm not sure what the story is here, or why St. Martin's (Pavilion) is publishing this one, but there it is. The pictures have been color corrected differently and it's in a different binding. Otherwise, it is the same. As one other reviewer noted, there are still no charts. Charts would have been a very helpful addition and one I gladly would have paid again to have, even though I already have the Harmony Guides. To be clear: I really have no problem at all with reprinting info in different formats. I just want to be told ahead of time that the content is a reprint so that I can make an informed decision about purchasing. This book was promoted as "The Ultimate," but in reality it is a reprint. That needs to be disclosed upfront.

If you do not already have the new Harmony Guides, this is a great way to buy the collection at a discount. There are some great stitches in the book, and this is why I gave it 3 stars. But I must say: I am really extremely disappointed, as I love collecting stitch dictionaries. I pre-ordered and was waiting on this one with much anticipation.

I thought this book might have some stitch patterns not found in the Barbara Walker series but alas, that wasn't the case. The color photography is nice. The fact that there are very few charts might annoy some knitters.

She is also part of the Information Security Group in the Department of Telematics Engineering at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) as Ph.D. candidate and research engineer. Solid Coverage, but Too Many Mistakes

I purchased the ebook for this and it is almost unusable without keeping the errata handy, reading the open issues on GitHub, and Googling. I am not sure if the print version is different.

For example,

On page 46, it has you edit a migrations file and has this line:
create_table :categories, {:id = & gt; false} do |t|

It should read:
create_table :categories, {:id => false} do |t|, but the book formatting has replaced all "=>" with "= & gt;". How was this missed? This happens constantly throughout the book.

Then it has you add a "respond_to :json" at the top of the first controller you edit, which doesn't work in Rails 4.2 without the "responders" gem. Not a huge deal as it does specify Rails 4.1 in the Gemfile, but this book was just released and you'd think it would work for a version of Rails that has been out a YEAR AFTER the release of this book.

On page 50 it has use you add attributes to the generated CategorySerializer to show which attributes to include in the JSON response. It clearly says to "specify the attributes cat_title and cat_subcats", but then the following code just makes up attribute names that result in an error:

class CategorySerializer < ActiveModel::Serializer
attributes :title, :sub_categories
end

Finally, when you figure all of that out, it has you use curl to test the JSON response. It says the curl response should be:

{"category":{"cat_title":"SCIENCE","cat_subcats":34}}

But, after you figure out all of the problems from above (if you even do), you actually get a JSON response showing EVERY attribute. It turns out (after an hour of reading through the Errata and Github page), that even though the author had you generate the application using "rails-api new" instead of "rails new", the ApplicationController (which is never mentioned) inherits from ActionController::API (when using rails-api new), but the author's code actually inherits from ActionController::Base (showing that she generated the code via rails new which is NOT what was used in the book). Changing to ActionController::Base results in the correct JSON being returned.

I really want to like this book as I am very interested in the topic, but having mistakes in almost every single piece of sample code makes you go crazy! I will gladly change my review if the ebook is updated to reflect the plethora of mistakes I have found so far.

Example Code Errors Ruin the Ride

Chock full of code errors that prevent the example code from running ... resulting in a huge waste of time. As a previous reviewer has stated, you must keep stack overflow, google and the errata list handy at all times when creating the examples ... I expected MUCH BETTER from this publisher.

Excellent book and worthy for a spot on your bookshelf!

Consider myself a junior RoR dev and with that I think an excellent book. Broad coverage of topics focused to Rails. It starts with the basics of restful, ruby on rails quick tutorial, designing API's in RoR, testing, deploying API, integrating into openweathermap.org, and lots of code examples and pictorial diagrams to help understand why things are done the way they are. It closes with a strong chapter on privacy and security. Fairly quick read if you skip a lot of the code examples and use code examples later for a reference.

Jewish life in early modern Poland was characterized by an adherence to Jewish law (halakhah) that Polish Jewry had inherited from medieval Franco-German Jewry, and almost all aspects of Jewish activity, even the most personal of matters, fell within its purview. Jewish law remained constant throughout the ages in some areas, but in others rabbis were forced to reinterpret it in light of the complexities of contemporary life.

Edward Fram draws upon the ordinances of Polish Jewry's political leadership, Polish legal records, and the responsa of some of the outstanding poseqim of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to show how Polish jurists responded to those complexities. His case studies, gleaned from a period of exceptional creativity in the annals of Polish Jewry, deal with weddings on the Sabbath, the rights of daughters to familial wealth, women in the marketplace, the personal reliability of those who dealt in the sale of kosher wine, competition among Jews for sources of livelihood obtained through leases (arendy), the transfer and payment of personal debts via bills payable to bearers (membrany), and personal insolvency.

Concerned with the needs of the underprivileged as well as those of the marketplace, these rabbis struggled to maintain the integrity of Jewish communal life and to preserve the tradition they perceived to represent divine law. Particularly in commerce, failure to observe Jewish law or at least the independent direction taken by the lay leadership often became the basis for communal legislation and practice. Fram shows how the Polish community, at times consciously and at times unconsciously, transformed some of its traditional values until they may have been unrecognizable to Jews from an earlier age.

The Epidemiology of Genetic Error

I'm finding Nasca and Pastide's tome on the Epidemiology of Cancer of great help to me in my own preparation of a monograph on the 'Origins of Cancer.' The authors meticulously follow the epidemiology of a killer with special emphasis on heredity; tobacco; alcohol; radiation; infectious; exogenous; dietary; hormonal and multifactorial causes.

I'm grateful that the authors don't fall into the all-too-familiar trap of trying to identify underlying mutagens as the cause of most human cancers. Mutagenic factors are significant in some cases but I am of the opinion that physical, chronic irritative/inflammatory and/or 'benign' cellular proliferations are at the root of most cancers.

Nature's Best

I found this collection of poetry in the dusty corner of an old bookstore and was pleasantly surprised. Mary Oliver composes her poetry, conjuring nature at its best, both the human aspects of it and those moments of quiet audacity in the natural world that humanity can never touch. She examines how we relate to the animals around us, and in some of her "twelve moons," Oliver asks us to put ourselves in the place of singing frogs and a birthing black bear. At the same time, she recalls the suicide of a friend or her great-aunt which, along with the others, make for poems of ultimately biting truth.

A wonderful short collection

Like the other reviewer, I also found this book at a used book store. I was going through a phase reading a lot of poetry that used nature to explore human themes, and this book was a wonderful fit. The poems are free verse, some more structured than others, and steeped in natural imagery drawn from animals, the woods, water, and of course, the titular moons.

Some of my favorite poems include:

"At Blackwater Pond" which starts out "You know how it feels, / wanting to walk into / the rain and disappear - / wanting to feel your life / brighten and grow weightless / as a leaf in fall."

"Sleeping in the Forest" which starts with "I thought the earth / remembered me, she / took me back so tenderly, arranging / her dark skirts, her pockets / full of lichens and seeds..." and ends with "...By morning / I had vanished at least a dozen times / into something better."

"Beaver Moon - The Suicide of a Friend" which includes the lines "When somewhere life / breaks like a pane of glass" and "...you turn in your bed / to watch the moon rise, and once more / see what a small coin it is / against the darkness...".

I love the simple yet beautiful expression in these poems. Even though most are nominally about an aspect of the natural world, they still speak of human issues - of nostalgia, of the loss of a friend, of family relationships, and of the poet finding herself. I highly recommend this short collection.

Very "wordy" ....rather than to the point...

This book is the chosen text for my Psychology of Aggression class. I have taken several Psych courses and used textbooks that were very clear, easily stated and to the point. This author is very "wordy" and tries to impress you with his jargon and writing style over the power to educate (I am not impressed.) This book is a teaching tool and should be better formulated and laid out. In this day and age anyone can make respectable power point graphs. The ones in this book are pitiful!
Maybe I am more of a visual learner. I like bulleted information, clear concise definitions and materials that are to the point. This book rambles at times...But I have no choice to dive in and try to engage myself in the material.
