MORE of The Bear (& friends), PLEASE!

I started by following Tom Cox's quirky twitterfeed "My Cat Is Sad Because:" (@MySadCat). After a while I'd come to love "The Bear", the "sad" cat in question, with his deep and wise eyes and his concerned, bemused, melancholilly philosophical outlook.

SO, I got the first book in this series, which is titled "Under the Paw". (I downloaded it on Kindle, which one can do "in" the UK. Really in it or virtually in it.)

The book was not (happily!) just a collection of tweets. In fact, no tweets at all.

It's actually the endearing, well-written life story of the author and how he came to be "a cat man", his life and loves (family, females, friends - and the mainly, cats!). It's engaging and varied (golfing conferences, foxes, and lots of house moves feature too), and you get to know The Bear, Janet, Ralph, Shipley, the late Brewer and many others as well as the author. On finishing the first book, I quickly got the next in the series (which can also be read as standalone books, but why would you?), "Talk to the Tail", and then this one, "The Good, The Bad and the Furry.."

SO, on finishing it, all I can say is: At the end of this book, The Bear is 17+ and going along just fine. May he be blessed with many more years! And Ralph, Shipley and the newer additions all have great big personalities.

SO, there MUST be a fourth book in the series!

By bringing Richard Rorty's pragmatism into conversation with early-twentieth-century Jewish thinkers, including Martin Buber and Ernst Bloch, Lerner begins the work of building bridges, while insisting on holding crucial differences in dialectical tension. Only such a dialogue, he argues, can prepare the foundations for modes of redemptive thought fit for the twenty-first century.

How dialectic of real and ideal hope can help us navigate that divide is one of the great themes of the book

Akiba Lerner's book makes a significant contribution to modern intellectual history and Judaic Studies. Lerner takes the long view, covering the unit history of the concept of hope from antiquity to the present. In doing so, he shows how intellectual historians have neglected to assign the concept its full potential and to recognize the powerful energy it exudes inside the force fields of the Western imagination. For too long, hope has been kept within the corral of Western Marxism, guarded by the messianic-utopian gatekeepers of a future redemption. Lerner shows us that hope has a far richer ancestral line and demands today a more complex assessment in post-modernity. By linking up the thinkers of the early twentieth century Jewish Renaissance with the secular neo-pragmatism of Richard Rorty, Lerner accomplishes a tour-de-force of intellectual bridge building.
Throughout the book Lerner weaves in a recurring theme of how hope almost always raises expectations in a way that opens up new possibilities while harboring dangers of dashed expectations. We recently experienced this collective roller coaster ride when Obama was elected in 2008 and the world had to adjust to the mundane reality that he could not change the world overnight. By calling our time the "Age of Obama" he doesn't mean the flesh and blood man as much as metaphorically, the dilemma we face in post-modernity of possessing almost endless opportunities, both materially and culturally, on the one hand, and yet existential threats to our civilization on the other. How dialectic of real and ideal hope can help us navigate that divide is one of the great themes of the book.
Chapter One sets the stage for expanding the discourse on hope by contrasting the biblical and Hellenistic attitude to hope as a choice between redemption and fate. The former established for later thinkers the possibility of human freedom, while the Greek emphasis on fate allowed contingency and solidarity to structure Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment thought, what Lerner calls, quoting Rorty, "clinging together against the dark." Lerner elaborates in this chapter how theologians, from Augustine to Aquinas connected hope in myriad ways to future salvation, but also how hope was to be incorporated into an imminent Christian world-view. These "vertical" hopes were then transplanted by the "horizontal" hope of the secular Renaissance, the Scientific Revolution, and ultimately the Enlightenment and post-modern age. Human experience now trumps divine revelation. Hope also becomes a launching pad for a critique of religion and replacing truth, conscience and a rejection of blind authority as a path towards human redemption. Lerner rightly emphasizes Spinoza as the trailblazer who pointed the way towards modern political autonomy and personal liberation. With Spinoza and the later Enlightenment, especially Kant, hope comes down to earth dressed as ethical philosophy based on rational morality (practical reason). The ideal of hope for human happiness and progress becomes, with Kant, the ethical foundation of the modern, ethical, universal state. Lerner then follows the next step in this narrative by showing how the Young Hegelians and Marx turned German Idealism upside down into a materialistic philosophy that radically rejected the illusions of religion and directed redemptive hopes to the social and political here and now. This chapter ends with the last turn, a "secularized eschatology" of Nietzsche, which brings us back to where philosophy began: the paradox that by "overcoming" Christianity, modern philosophy could not shake off the kernel of redemptive hope that had been inherited from the ancient Jews and the Greeks.
In the second chapter, Lerner focuses on the "crisis of reason" brought about by the shocking carnage and irrationality of World War I. In particular Jewish intellectuals in Europe reacted to the retreat of the Enlightenment by recovering the Messianic elements in Judaism that their rationalistic forefathers had rejected. Martin Buber is the prime example of this kind of thinker of the Jewish Renaissance, who created a new kind of philosophical anthropology by combining existentialist and Talmudic and Messianic tropes. Redemption in Buber's philosophy is relocated from the end-time to all the moments through time, which allows to him to get a purchase on inner subjectivity combined with a social philosophy of hope based on solidarity (I - Thou) and vitalism. Lerner then contrasts Buber with Rosenzweig, who argued against the politicization of Messianic hope (for example Zionism) and for integrating redemptive hope into everyday practices and rituals. Likewise Gershom Sholem was suspicious of the Messianic elements in Zionism, and foresaw that Buber's mixing of Messianism and politics could become a dangerous and intoxicating ideology. Lerner then brings Leo Strauss into the mix, who also recognized, but was wary of Buber's political theology on one hand, justifying the good life through a divine source, which existed uneasily, on the other hand, with a more secular kind of political philosophy based on the needs of the living community. Despite these critiques, Buber's Phenomenology of Hope, especially his book I and Thou (1922) had a profound influence on later theology and existentialism. Lerner dissects Buber's ideas with great precision and expertise, showing how he introduced into twentieth century thought an alternative epistemology, based on Biblical (in contrast to Hellenic-rationalistic) inter-subjective experience of "knowing" through individual encounters. Lerner also deftly explains how this kind of "knowing" was different from Heidegger's seemingly similar turn against the rationalist tradition, in that Buber doesn't abandon the individual to the lonely quest for authenticity in solitary being towards one's down death.
Buber grounded hope in intersubjective dialogue and the social reality of community, which leads directly to the third chapter and Ernst Bloch's monumental attempt to establish a School of Hope based on an explicit philosophy of hope. Lerner carefully explores a series of related post-utopian narratives on hope, Erich Fromm, Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno, as well as contemporary scholarship by thinkers such as Jeffrey Bloechl, Jürgen Habermas and Gianni Vatimo, who all in one way or another want to recapture elements of religious thinking in a non-regressive manner in a post-metaphysical age.
And so the stage is set for the introduction to Rorty's post-modernist turn to hope as a category for replacing the certainty of past metaphysical and transcendental philosophical systems. In his most utopian moments, Rorty thought that humans could liberate themselves from the religious and metaphysical chains of the past and find emancipation in an ever more liberated, democratic, socially just and enlightened collective, held together by voluntary moments of willed solidarity without any truth narratives. Lerner offers us a very complex picture of how Rorty thought about timeless philosophical questions such as justice, knowledge, love, morality and community in a neo-pragmatic, postmodernist framework. He then gives equal time to Rorty's critics and shows that they found holes and aporias in Rorty's reasoning that were compelling, even to Rorty, who adjusted his views as he worked out his philosophical positions in his later years. In essence, Rorty's attempt to cleanse the public sphere of all remnants of religious transcendence and metaphysics ended up throwing out a lot of babies with the bath water. So Lerner takes us full circle back to where his book started, with exploring "transcendent signifiers" in Western thought. He ends this chapter by positing ecumenical tolerance for religious narratives.
In the conclusion, Lerner tackles the question of how it is possible to build on Rorty's insights on leaving behind epistemological certainty, that knowledge is a "raft" and not a pyramid, but nevertheless elaborates on a holistic account of community based on liberal "true" principles of a just society. Buber's notions of intersubjective encounters provides for Lerner the missing element lacking in Rorty's stark relativism and neo-pragmatism. He calls Buber's account a "phenomenology of intersubjective hope" and makes a compelling case that Buber's form of what we today call communitarianism fills in many of the gaps left wide open by the stark and often lifeless structures of modern liberal society. The danger is that with Buber the public sphere can collapse into personal subjectivity, the secular into the sacred. In response to this problem, Lerner fuses Buber and Rorty together into a new synthesis, calling on various thinkers such as Emil Fackenheim, David Hartman, Steven Schwarzschild, Thomas Nagel and Jeffrey Stout, all working within and trying to expand the "School of Hope" towards a coherent narrative of hopeful human social and political progress minus all the illusions. The book ends with a plea for not abandoning the hard task of "keeping hope alive" against all the odds faced by very fallible human beings.
This book will appeal to European intellectual historians, scholars in Judaic Studies and the history of religion. It will also be of interest to specialists on Buber and Rorty, but generalists as well, interested in the Jewish Renaissance, theology, eschatology, post-modernism and communitarianism. In sum, Lerner's book makes a very valuable contribution, not only to the scholarly literature of a key concept, a series of evolving ideas on hope, but also to the essential human project of finding and keeping our epistemological and moral bearings in an increasingly uncertain world.

Good in places, weak in others

The research support for the authors strategy is weak but the book is worth buying for the wisdom it contains on risk, insiders, and investor psychology. Inexperienced investors could find themselves stranded when implementing the books' often subjective sell criteria.
One of the authors admit to having to give up part of their occupations to write the book, it shows. Is this book really a value investing book in disguise? Take out one rule about stocks being down 50% and you are left with a book on insiders and low P/E investing.
There is an absense of any testing of the final recommended set of rules. A clue as to why is when the authors admit that in September 1996 only a handful of stocks met their recommended strategy criteria.
Where is the authors own performance following thier criteria?
The research cited in the book is only on each core components of their purchase criteria but not on the combination, or risk management rules or acombination thereof, and therfore claiming the whole is suported by the research is a giant leap.
This lack of research leaves many questions unanswered. How did their strategy do with gold stocks, or steel stocks, which have been contrarian plays for years? What would have happened to their strategy in this raging growth stock bull market?
The authors too often fir example of their strategy by making exceptions to their rules by using subjective analysis and hindsight: such as "when the company's prospects are clearly improving, when the stock price seems to be climbing a 'wall of worry.'"
Too often the authors use the words "often", "can". which are useless as rules or criteria. Too often the authors contradict themselves.
However the good sections on risk, investor psychology make it worthwhile reading.

Simple guidelines remove emotional errors of stock trading

This book is an excellent work on exercising rational techniques for investing in the stock market with a long view of returns. Not intended to be a "speculators" guide, the authors describe specifically what indicators prompt an investor to buy and sell, actions that will be contrary to prevailing market sentiment, but validated by the results of several long-term studies on the success of these indicators in the market. The book doesn't pretend to be fool-proof in its methodology, offering sound advice on how to protect against losses, save profits, and distribute risk in one's portfolio. All this adds to the credibility of the authors and raises the reader's confidence in the thoroughness of their approach to stock market investing.

A Modern Classic, A Peer To Ben Graham

In 1998, Anthony Gallea, a Portfolio Manager at Smith Barney, with help from William Patalon, a professional writer, wrote the classic "Contrarian Investing." Jim Rogers wrote the forward to the book. Many successful investors have cited this book as a book that greatly influenced them. This volume, like Ben Graham's "The Intelligent Investor" is at times dated, yet full of classic investing principles that stand the test of time. Every serious stock market investor must read this book. I summarize its key points below, but do not let that stop you from reading the book yourself!

General contrarian ideas:
' Watch out for "this time it's different from all other times" in the press.
' Don't "buy when blood is in the streets." See the blood, wait a while, then buy.
' "Study and think, think and study."
' "Buy on the cannons, sell on the trumpets"
' Success as a contrarian demands a long-term view (2-3 years).
' Contrarian: buying when others won't. Once we've bought, we want other investors to come around to our point of view.
' Contrarian path is not always an easy one to travel.

1. What is a contrarian?
A natural skeptic. If everyone believes something strongly enough to have already acted on it, there is profit to be made in taking the opposite position. This requires a real consensus, an extreme of opinion, not just a 10% stock drop. Contrarian investors succeed by not only disagreeing with the crowd, but knowing when to act on that disagreement. They are looking for extremes in opinion.

Alpha Big Time is a solo book for a new character that debuted in Spider Man. While it is nice to get new characters, this one does little to stand out from the pack. There is room for growth, if they decided to do more.

Collects Alpha: Big Time issues #1-5

The character Alpha debuted in Amazing Spider-Man issue #692. Much like Peter Parker, this teenage boy received his powers from a science accident. Spider-Man became a mentor to him, but it appeared that he lost his powers and that his hero's journey had come to an end.

However, it seems that his journey had only just begun because the Superior Spider-Man helps him get his powers back in this volume. Alpha's power-set is huge. Reminiscent of Superman, Alpha can do basically anything. In this volume he starts to make a new life for himself in a new city. Even though this isn't an origin story, it definitely feels like the hero's true beginning.

I liked this collection more than I thought I would. A lot more. I would have liked to have read more in this series, but it was cancelled after only 5 issues.

A funny and real and goofy and fun way to forget or just laugh at your worries.

Gemma Correll is a very funny woman who draws very funny pictures. How's that for a profound, insightful start to a review? Ms. Correll's new book, The Worrier's Guide to Life, reveals her anxious side. If you're the anxious type, you will find a kindred spirit here. Worried about rare diseases? Awkward social situations? Pet peeves? Body image? So is she.

Plus there's a lot of other random stuff thrown in here. Here humor is rather absurd and silly, like the "Less Appealing Seasonal Drinks," like "Yellow Snow Iced Tea" and "Turkey and Gravy Macchiato." Her "Ye Olde Video Games" include sure hits like "Dance Dance Industrial Revolution" and "Harpsichord Hero." I particularly enjoyed her more realistic women's magazines: "Vague: For the Fashion Backward and Just Plain Lazy," including a feature article on "What to Wear from the Pile of Clothes on Your Floor." "Out of Touch," which has pictures of people with the caption, "We have no idea who any of these people are!" "Mediocre Housekeeping: How to Get Away With Doing the Bare Minimum."

Her content is definitely female oriented. I think she'd acknowledge that me deal with anxieties and issues, to, but she's writing primarily "girl to girl." (Not to say a sensitive male like myself won't get the humor. . . .) Correll is funny and real and goofy and fun. The Worrier's Guide to Life will make you forget your worries . . . for a bit.

A Gift From a Friend

I was not expecting this book, but a friend of mine had sent it to me with the note that is was for one of her favorite worriers. I laughed because the front cover of the book were thought bubbles of things I had thought that day.

The inside was full of different chapters such as "Health & Hypochondria" (which hits the low hanging fruit of people who Google their symptoms and end up believing they're dying), "Fashion Frenzies", and other topics which cause the worrier to panic on an every day basis. The best chapter, by far, to me, was "Love and Other Anxieties".

Overall, this book of cartoons is one that speaks more to females, most likely, but even more to people who dislike socializing and find that most situations cause them anxiety.

I will say that some of the cartoons I did not find funny or relevant or they were oddly sorted, which took the review from a five star to four star, but I still got a laugh out of this. I think this would be a great gift for an anxious person with a sense of humor!

I love this book. I've looked back and laughed at some of the images several times. Some of the comics address heavy topics such as depression and anxiety (which I have experienced) in a light hearted way.

A Qualified Success

This book provides an excellent discussion of the development and rise of these two champions. There is a lot of narrative history and illustrative games annotated (quite deeply) by Kasparov with help from computer software. The games are a who's who of the greats in history, including the two principals and Tal, Korchnoi, Portisch, Fischer, Polugayevsky, Stein, Geller, Kasparov himself, and Larsen et al. Interestingly, both Spassky and Petrosian defeated Kasparov twice in tournament play (something I was unaware of) and all these games are presented.

As with all of Kasparov's books, the print quality is excellent, and there are a lot of diagrams presented within each game.

Where the book is deficient, however, is what it leaves out. There is no discussion at all about Spassky's world title match with Fischer in 1972 (or their match in 1992)-you have to buy his book on Fischer for that. Even so, Kasparov should have included and annotated games 15 and/or 18 from the 1972 match (which are not included in the Fischer book), and a couple of Spassky's games from the 1992 match . Likewise, there is no coverage of Spassky's 1977 Candidate's match with Korchnoi-you have to buy his book on Korchnoi/Karpov for that; even so he should have included a couple of games from this match that are not in the Korchnoi/Karpov book (there are plenty to chose from, it was an epic battle). Also missing in the Petrosian section is any game coverage of his Candidate's matches with Korchnoi in 1977 and 1980, which is curious, since none of these games is in the Korchnoi/Karpov book either.

I was stunned

I initially bought this book because I wanted to acquire a collection of Petrosian games that were well annotated. I figured Kasparov would be a good annotator :-)

What I found out is that the section on Petrosian (181 pages) is one long story, where Kasparov shows how ideas were formed, tested adopted, refuted and so on. Throughout the weaving of the progression of chess ideas during Petrosian's time, he incrementally adds to Petrosian's life to give the reader a complete picture of him.

This is unlike any other chess book I've purchased, and I was amazed once I figured out what I was reading. I was stunned at how readable it is at one level, although you could spend hours on each game if you delve into all of the analysis.

Probably a great book...for experts.

I bought this book because I'm a big fan of Petrosian and wanted the great Kasparov's insight into "Iron Tigran's" slippery positional style. I was expecting Kasparov would explain the logic and strategic goals behind Petrosian's sometimes mystifying moves and he does that...to some extent. However, for the most part, he provides strings of variations. In fact, the analysis for many of the games consists almost entirely of variations with very little prose at all.

He does provide a bit of biographical bio on Petrosian, as well as on Spassky, Gligoric, Polugayevsky, Portisch, and Stein which I enjoyed, Overall, I must admit I was disappointed as this isn't the book I thought I was buying. I'm sure it's a good book, but he was apparently writing for his fellow masters more so than for a club player striving to join their ranks.

If, like me, you're looking for an analysis of Petrosian's style that explains his ideas, I highly recommend Peter H. Clarke's classic work, "Petrosian's Best Games of Chess 1946-1963".

Grade 4-8-Presented by the St. Charles Players, this is an example of radio theatre at its finest. The narration moves the abbreviated story along at a brisk, easy-to-follow pace, while the highly polished troupe of actors offers a colorful array of voices and British dialectsAfrom Cockney low-lives to privileged members of the aristocracy. Sound effects and music add spark to the production. Although this version is only about one-third the length of the original, both the story line and the picture of British social conditions and injustices during Dickens's time come through vividly as young Oliver makes his way from the desolation of a workhouse for orphans to Fagin's den of thieves in London and, finally, to the comfort and security of life with an honorable gentleman. As such, it is bound to whet the appetites of upper elementary and middle school youngsters who will be intrigued into reading the original. It also offers, through drama, an enjoyable way of understanding history and should stimulate lively discussions on the relationship between dire poverty and a life of crime.

Oliver Twist was Dickens's second novel and one of his darkest, dealing with burglary, kidnapping, child abuse, prostitution, and murder. Alongside this gallery of horrors are the corrupt and incompetent institutions of 19th-century England set up to address social problems and instead making them worse. The author's moral indignation drives the creation of some of his most memorably grotesque characters: squirming, vile Fagin; brutal Bill Sykes; the brooding, sickly Monks; and Bumble, the pompous and incorrigibly dense beadle. Clearly, a reading of this work must carry the author's passionate narrative voice while being flexible and broad enough to define the wide range of character voices suggested by the text. John Wells's capable but bland reading only suggests the rich possibilities of the material. Restraint and Dickens simply don't go together. The abridgment deftly and seamlessly manages to deliver all major characters and plot lines, but there are many superior audiobook versions of this material, both abridged and unabridged. Not recommended.

Thieves, Murderers and all of their Ilk

This book surprised me, not by the quality of its writing, which one can expect from Charles Dickens, but by the violent, lusty primal quality of the story. This is no dry musty tome, but a vital novel that arouses both passion and intellect. A literal page turner, I found myself having more than one sleepless night when I just couldn't put it down.
Inside are some of the major characters in the realm of fiction; Fagin and his gang of child thieves, including the Artful Dodger. Nancy, the proverbial hooker with a heart of gold. Master Charles Bates (was this a pun even then?) Bad Bill Sikes, who shows the darker edge to all of this dangerous fun, and the innocent, pure Oliver Twist, who is the very definition of nature over nurture.
A great book, and one that I am glad to have finally read.

A Page-Turner

A novel of this size can be daunting for the reader. "If I start this book, I'm going to have to spend the next month finishing it". That's what I thought anyway. But in Oliver Twist I sailed through the pages. It's rare that a classic, and I have read many of them, becomes a page-turner but this one did. Maybe I was lucky in not having seen the film versions prior to the reading of the book because I desperately wanted to find out what happened to Oliver and the multitude of other brilliantly written characters who inhabit the pages of Dickens' classic.
The plot is simple. A boy escapes his orphan home to live in London with a group of thieves and pickpockets. He's saved from this depraved life by a kindly, lonely old gentleman. But the villains, Bill Sykes and especially Fagin, fear that the boy may rat them out and so they kidnap him back. Can Oliver make it back to the life he deserves?
Oliver's story is not a very originally one, but it is enlivened by some of the greatest characters I've ever seen written. My personal favourites and there are many, are Noah Claypole who becomes a principle player and a very funny one at that, near the book's conclusion; and Mr. Brownlow, who's catchphrase "I'll eat my own head" had me bursting into laughter.
The book is diminished by its excessive sentimentality at the conclusion. Its female characters, apart from the courageous Nancy, are written in a golden light so as to become fantasies rather than the gloriously dirty reality of their male counterparts. A sub-plot between Mary and her boyfriend is ridiculously excessive.
Against these weaknesses, the book is a triumph of character. Often memorably played on screen, the two villains have become more famous than the title character, who is slightly simpering. Fagin is deliciously smarmy and Sykes is evil incarnate. They get their comuppance in justifiably brutal fashion. Dickens like most of us was a sucker for a happy ending.

Hard to put down

I couldn't get into Dickens in high school, I guess my maturity level just wasn't there. But I bought this classic for my home schooling 6th grade daughter, and vowed to read it no matter what. Well, after the first chapter, I was hooked. And she really loved it too. We read it much faster than I had anticipated, considering the language and size of the book. Highly recommended!
